Experience the total Queen Charlotte Track, start
to finish. The full Queen Charlotte Track is 72km, you will experience this
split over 4 easily managed day hike sections with scheduled water transfers to
and from Picton each day.
Day One: Ship Cove to Furneaux
Lodge 17km / 5 hours
Departing Picton you will cruise with us
approximately 1 hour to Historic Ship Cove, the start of the Queen Charlotte
Track, spend some time here and check out the Captain Cook Monument before
heading out onto the track. The initial few kilometres from Ship Cove are
uphill, but expect fantastic views from the lookout at the top. This section of
track is particularly beautiful as you are surrounded by native regenerating
forest beneath a high canopy of trees which is home to many native New Zealand
bird species. Turning the corner you will walk past Resolution Bay and Tawa
Saddle, see the views of the sound spread out before you before the track
begins to follow an old bridle path dropping down into the Endeavour Inlet.
Upon arrival feel free to head inside and enjoy the restaurant and bar
facilities, make sure you are on the wharf ready for pick up at the specified
time.
Day Two: Furneaux Lodge to Punga
Cove 11km / 3 hour
Depart Picton and again cruise to Ship Cove to drop
other walkers off before arriving at Furneaux Lodge for your walk. This section
of the track mainly follows the coastline around Endeavour Inlet and is fairly
flat with not much elevation at all. Walk over a swing bridge and through areas
of farmland and native forest, lush with the sound of birdsong. If time allows,
check out the Historic Antimony Mine sight at the head of the Endeavour Inlet,
an area again rich in History. Continue around the shoreline with pasture lands
on both sides before you arrive at the Department of Conservation Camp Bay
Campsite, from there the Punga Cove Resort is a 10 minute walk away.
Day Three: Torea Bay to Punga
Cove 25km / 7 hour
Today’s departure from Picton to Torea Bay only
takes a short 15 minutes giving you 8 hours complete the walk. A steep climb
out of Torea Bay will take you through native bush up to the ridgeline where
you are rewarded with panoramic views over the Queen Charlotte and Kenepuru
Sound as you see the landscape stretched out in front of you, the track mainly
stays at the full elevation of 400 – 450 meters for the entirety of the walk.
Day Four: Torea Bay to Anakiwa
21km / 6 hour
Pack your bags and check out of your accommodation,
bring your luggage with you for check in at the Beachcomber Cruises office, we
will store this for you while you are on the track today. Again a short 15
minute ride over to Torea Bay before heading off in the direction of Anakiwa,
the very end of the Queen Charlotte Track. Reaching a high elevation again on
the other side of the Torea Saddle, enjoy those spectacular views as you follow
old bridle paths that take you from the top elevation gently back down to sea
level as you enjoy a gentle walk past Mistletoe Bay into Anakiwa. Once you are
over the steep climb out of the Torea Saddle, the rest of the walk today is a
fairly smooth and easy grade.
